In this post I’m going to walk you though the installation of VMware vCenter Server 6.0.
VMware vCenter Server is the management server or central point for accessing ESX hosts and VMware clusters, accessing VMs, Storage, vSwitch and other components. There are two version of VMware vCenter server – an installable version which runs on the Microsoft Windows and virtual appliance edition. In this post I am going to cover installable version of vCenter Server 6.0.
You can configure vCenter Server from the vSphere Web Client, including settings such as licensing, statistics collection, logging, and other settings.
vCenter Server requires a 64-bit operating system such as Windows 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
So don’t forget to check the software and hardware requirements before you proceed.. I have already installed Windows Server 2012 R2 for vCenter Server and downloaded VMware vCenter Server 6.0 ISO.
Mount the vSphere 6.0 installation media. The installation wizard appears. In the left pane select “vCenter Server for Windows” and click on Install.
In the welcome screen window, Click next to proceed,
Accept VMware License agreement and click Next.
There are two deployment types in VMware vCenter, i.e. Embedded Architecture and Centralized Architecture. Embedded Architecture is recommended for deployments with 8 or fewer management nodes. Centralized Architecture is recommended for deployments with 9 or more management nodes. In my case I am going to use Embedded Architecture.
Enter the hostname that you would like to use to manage the local system. The hostname will be encoded in the system’s SSL certificate and components will contact each other via this address.
For Single Sign on Configuration enter your domain name & password as shown below. You will need below user name & password while configuring vCenter Single Sign On, so keep note of password.
In my case I am going to use Windows Local System Account.
Keep the vCenter ports as it is. If you get any port conflict error open IIS & check whether exiting website is going the port which is required by vCenter server.
Click on Install to start the installation process.
Click on Finnish to Complete vCenter installation.
Now vCenter server 6.0 has been installed, now next step is to access vCenter server. If required install flash player 11.9 or higher to access vCenter server . If flash is not installed on your PC you will below error message i.e. “The VMware vSphere host client includes built-in browser and does not use browsers already installed on your system. The built-in browser requires Adobe Flash Play 11.9 or higher”
Now Download Flash Player & installed it on your machine.http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
Once you install Flash Player open your browser & access vCenter Server URL e.g. https://localhost/vsphere-client in my case my vCenter URL is as below,
Enter your vCenter server username & password which you set while installing vCenter Server.
VMware vSphere Web Client is used to manage vCenter Server & to perform all vCenter server tasks. If you to manage single ESXi host you have to use vSphere Host Client.
