Step By Step How to Solve Windows 8.1 and 8 Black Screen Issue upon boot

Today I have installed Windows 8.1 as I was facing black screen issue when I start the machine. For my Windows 8 PC's I have faced black screen issue after installing Windows updates in October 2013 and for Windows 8.1 issue starts immediately after upgrading Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1.

If your PC experiences a black screen after upgrading to Windows 10. Please check Step by Step Guide to solve Windows 10 Black Screen.

I found out possible solutions for the issue and the problem was with the graphics card driver issue.

Let start,
Shut down your machine and start Power On. Start PC in safe mode.
I entered in safe-mode by repeatedly pressing F8 key. You have to be patience to enter into Safe mode. While entering into safe on screen you will get "Please Wait" message.
Now press Troubleshoot option.

In the Troubleshoot screen, press Advanced options.

In the Troubleshoot screen, press Advanced options.

Now you will get below message that machine is about to restart in order to change several Windows options, including enabling Safe Mode after restart. Press Restart.

Press the F4 key on your keyboard once machine restarts to enter into the Safe Mode. If you you fail then you have repeat all above steps again.
Now go Control Panel-> System-> Device Manager
Expand Display Adapter & disable listed Display Adapters driver. In my case its Intel HD Graphics. Also disable listed Monitors.

UPDATE-1 -  If your issue persist download & install Latest Display Card drivers & motherboard chipset drivers. I was facing same issue after above workaround but by installing latest display card & intel motherboard chipset drivers it resolved.

UPDATE- 2

Step By Step guide to Upgrade from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to SharePoint Foundation 2010 & SharePoint 2013

I have upgraded my TFS Server 2010 to TFS server 2013, now I want to upgrade TFS SharePoint service from 3.0 to 2010. I am going to use new machine for SharePoint foundation 2010 (i.e.. I am going to use my TFS 2013 server).

For upgrade process I am going to use Database attach upgrade approach, then this method allows me to attach and upgrade the content databases from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to SharePoint Server 2010. This process upgrades the data in the content databases, but does not transfer any farm settings.

Note- For inplace upgrade you can only upgrade to SharePoint 2010 (any edition) if you have installed Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or SharePoint 2007 Service Pack 2.

So lets get started,

Take backup of content Database of Sharepoint Services 3.0 & restore backed up database on New SQL server. Install Sharepoint 2010 on same machine or new machine. If installed on same machine uninstall WSS 3.0.

To mount backed up WSS 3.0 DB on new Sharepoint server run below command,

PS C:\Users\santosh> Mount-SPContentDatabase -Name tfs_WSS_content -WebApplication http://vmwareandme-tfs-01 -Updateuserexperience

OR

stsadm.exe -o addcontentdb -url http://vmwareandme-tfs-01/vmware-tfs -databasename tfs_WSS_Content -databaseserver vmwareandme-sql-02

stsadm.exe -o addpermissionpolicy -url http://vmwareandme-tfs-01/pune-tfs -userlogin vmwareandme\santosh -permissionlevel "full control"

Try to open Sharepoint URl

http://vmwareandme & check site content...

to view any errors,

PS C:\Users\santosh> Test-SPContentDatabase -name tfs_WSS_content -webapplication http://vmwareandme-tfs-01

I have get many webparts errors as in Sharepoint 2010 so many sharepoint templates were missing. So I have copied below three teamplates from old TFS 2010 server (i.e. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Tools\Templates\) to new TFS server & deploy it.

I have copied templated in my new sharepoint server c:\. To add templates to sharepoint server 2010 run below commands,

Stsadm -o addsolution -filename "C:\Microsoft.TeamFoundation.SharePoint.wsp"
Stsadm -o addsolution -filename "C:\TswaWebPartCollection.wsp"
Stsadm -o addsolution -filename C:\Microsoft.TeamFoundation.SharePoint.Dashboards.wsp.wsp

To deploy templates in sharepoint server 2010 run below commands

Stsadm -o deploysolution -name TswaWebPartCollection.wsp -local -force
Stsadm -o deploysolution -name Microsoft.TeamFoundation.SharePoint.wsp -local -force
Stsadm -o deploysolution -name Microsoft.TeamFoundation.SharePoint.Dashboards.wsp -local -force

Update -> If you are unable to view transferred TFS project sharepoint portal. Then open "Team Foundation Server Administration Console" and uninstall "Extension for Sharepoint Products".
After uninstalling "Extension for Sharepoint Products" restart server & again reinstall "Extension for Sharepoint Products".

Now you will be open TFS project sharepoint portal without any issues.

Upgrade from SharePoint 2010 to 2013
If you are planning to upgrade SharePoint 2010 to 2013 for your TFS server, process is very simple. After upgrading SharePoint from 3.0 to 2010 follow below process
1. take backup of database (i.e. tfs_wss_content).
2. Uninstall SharePoint 2010
3. Install SharePoint 2013
4. Mount Sharepoint Content database for Sharepoint 2013

stsadm.exe -o addcontentdb -url http://vmwareandme-tfs-01/vmware-tfs -databasename tfs_WSS_Content -databaseserver vmwareandme-sql-02

stsadm.exe -o addpermissionpolicy -url http://vmwareandme-tfs-01/pune-tfs -userlogin vmwareandme\santosh -permissionlevel "full control"

 5. Then open "Team Foundation Server Administration Console" and uninstall "Extension for SharePoint Products".
After uninstalling "Extension for SharePoint Products" restart server & again reinstall "Extension for SharePoint Products".

All the packages that used to be on the DVD are still available from the archive.
5. Interface updates
A new release of compiz and Unity has been included with this milestone. Highlights of this release are:
A new Alt+Tab switcher.
“Places” were renamed to “Lenses”, now integrating multiple sources and advanced filtering like ratings, range, categories. A new music lens linked to Banshee is also installed by default. The restructuring for getting some new features has been done. Known bugs and regressions are documented below.
Better performance of launchers and panel, ported to GTK 3 and GTK 3-based indicator stack.
So lets get started,
1. Create Typical Virtual machine under VMware Workstation 8 & specify the Ubuntu . No modification is required as such. Its straight forward process. Check below screen shots for more details…
2. Ubuntu boots perfect into text mode but not able to view GUI. When I run “startx” to start  Window Systemserver noting come up.
so I installed  X Window System server using below command,
#sudo apt-get install xinit
Afterwards I hit Control-Alt-F1, log in, and Enter,
#sudo apt-get install gdm
Afterwards it asks you which display manager to use by default; choose gdm.
Now type:
sudo service lightdm stop
sudo service gdm start
When the lightdm problem is fixed, you can remove gdm and it should default back to using lightdm; if not you can manually start it.
#sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
#sudo ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
And reboot your Ubuntu VM to apply the changes. Afterwards Ubuntu GUI comes up. I have not face any issue for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric in VirtualBox 4.1.4

Step By Step How to Upgrade Team Foundation Server 2010 & 2012 (TFS 2010 & TFS 2012) to Team Foundation Server 2013 (TFS 2013)

With the recent launch of Visual Studio 2013 i.e TFS 2013, I have received request regarding upgrade process from TFS 2010, TFS 2012 to TFS 2013. Upgrade process is very smooth, easy & less painful. In this post I have explained upgrade process with all steps & screen shots, so it will be easy to upgrade existing TFS 2010,TFS 2012 to TFS 2013.

The upgrade process is similar for both TFS 2010 & 2012 if you want to upgrade to TFS 2013. As upgrade process has not changed significantly since TFS 2012.

TFS 2010 Software Requirement,

TFS 2013 now requires Windows Server 2008 R2 and higher as well as SQL 2012 SP1 (CU2 recommended) and higher.  Microsoft no longer support Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 R2, or SQL Server 2012 RTM.  If you use SharePoint, we now require SharePoint 2010 and higher.

For more Hardware & Software requirement Please check MSDN page.

So lets get started,

  • I have prepared two Windows Server 2010 x64 bit Virtual machines for my TFS 2010 & for SQL 2012 Enterprise Server.
  • Installed TFS 2013 & SQL Server 2012 on Virtual machine. Please make sure version of old SQL Server & use the same version while upgrading TFS server to 2013. e.g. If you are using enterprise edition then use SQl 2012 enterprsie else you will face lots of issue while restoring TFS backup.
  • Backup TFS 2010/2012 server SQL backup. Use SQL Management server to take backup of SQL TFS server.
  • Restore backup of TFS 2010/2012 server on new SQl server 2010 using SQL management studio. Restore all TFS backup & do not miss anything.
  • Now you are all set to upgrade to TFS 2013. Lets start the upgrade process.
Open TFS Administration Console and click Configure Installed Features & click on Upgrade.

Click Next to start the upgrade process..

Enter name of SQL server instance & click on List Available Databases to list all exiting database names which we restored from TFS 2010 SQl server to new SQL 2012 server & Click Next.

Enter Service account details which we are going to use for TFS Application tier & click on Test to check the entered login credentials & click Next to proceed.

Check Configure Reporting for use with Team Foundation Server & click Next.

Enter Reporting Service Instance details (i.e. SQL Server name) & click on populate URL's

Enter Team Foundation Server Warehouse Database SQL instance name & click on Test. Also clikc on List Available Database to list the database details.

Enter Analysis Services SQL server instance & click on Test. You will get error message if SQL client tools is not installed TFS 2013 server. So install SQL client tools if you get error if you click on test.

Click NEXT to proceed.

Select Use Current SharePoint Settings & click Next.

Click on Configure.

Click Next to start the upgrade process.

Now upgrade has been completed successfully.

Now if you want to use exiting SharePoint Server then upgrade will very easy. If you are planning to use new SharePoint then it will be very complicated. As you need to upgrade SharePoint Services from 3.0 to 2007 & then from 2007 to 2010 & to 2013. If you want to use latest SharePoint 2013 features. Or go with exiting SharePoint.

To install SharePoint 2013 foundation for TFS. Select Configure extensions for SharePoint products.

Click Next to continue.

Click on Install SharePoint Foundation 2013

Now SharePoint 2013 is installed successfully.

Now specify the SQL server instance for SharePoint 2013 & click Next.

Enter SharePoint farm Account details & click next.

Click Next to complete the upgrade process.

Now open Team Foundation Administration Console & go to Application tier & reverify the paths i.e SQL server instance, Web Access URL, SharePoint & Reporting services URL. If required change the URL path & test the Path.

If you want to move reporting service backup from old SQL server to SQL server 2012. Please follow below which cover all steps.
