Step By Step Guide How to install Lync 2013 Archiving Server Role & How to view Lync 2013 Conversation history

In last post Installing Lync 2013 on Windows Server 2012 we completed installation of Lync 2013 and Deployment of Lync 2013 Monitoring Role. Now we are going to install & configure Lync 2013 Archiving role on same front end server in lab environment. In Lync 2010 it was recommended to have separate server for monitoring & archiving roles but now this has been changed & monitoring & archiving role will be installed on your lync 2013 front end server.
Below are Lync 2013 Archive Server New features,

  1. Exchange Server 2013 Integration as the archiving store
  2. SQL Store Mirroring for high Availability
  3. MSMQ is no longer needed & replaced by LySS (Lync Storage Service)
  4. Collocation of Archiving on Front End Servers
  5. Archiving of Whiteboard and Polls
With the help of Lync 2013 Archiving Server Role we can Archive,

Peer-to-peer IM's
Conferences-> IM's, Whiteboards and polls, Conference Contents,Upload,Shares, Joining ,Leaving of Conference

In my case I am going to use my existing Lync 2013, SQL Server 2012 for host Archiving server role databases.
Open Lync 2013 Topology & define your SQL serve store as shown below and publish the topology.

If you login to your SQL Server you will find three new databases for Lync 2013 Archiving server role as shown below,

  • LcsCDR
  • LcsLog
  • QoEMetrics

To configure Lync Archiving Server Role, open  Lync Server 2013 Control Panel and Navigate to the Monitoring and Archiving.

Click on Archiving tab and Select Archive Internal Communication and Archive External Communication an Commit the changes.

Click on Archiving Configuration tab & set Archiving Setting to "Archive IM and Web conferencing sessions". Enable purging of Archiving data.
If you want to use Exchange Server 2013 for Lync 2013 archiving the check the box for Exchange Server integration.

How to View Archived Content->
Open Lync Server Management Shell on Lync Front End server & run below command,

Export-CsArchivingData -Identity SQL-SERVER-WHICH-HOST-ARCHIVE-SERVERNAME-DB -startdate 11/26/2013 -EndDate 11/30/2013 -OutputFolder c:\new

Above command will export the conversations to the output folder, as shown below. The file will have conf or p2p at the end.
